Shadowfolio backtests and tracks investing strategies you describe, inside ChatGPT. Here is how it works, and how to reach us.

Using it

  • Describe a strategy: for example "Backtest holding SPY only when it's above its 200-day average, otherwise BIL". Shadowfolio asks for anything you leave open: what to trade, when to buy, when to sell, how often to rebalance and how to size positions. Say "use the defaults" to skip the questions.
  • What it can trade: US-listed stocks and ETFs. Use your own tickers (up to 50), the S&P 500 (or one of its sectors), or a list of about 100 popular ETFs.
  • Rules: price against a moving average, a fast and a slow average, RSI, return over a period, distance from a recent high, a stop loss, a take-profit and a holding period. Any rule can look at another ticker ("only while SPY is above its 200-day average").
  • Results: the last 12 months of trading days, ending at the latest US close: total return, max drawdown, Sharpe ratio (0% risk-free rate), volatility, win rate and trades, next to a benchmark (SPY unless you name another). Trades fill at each day's close with a 0.05% cost per buy or sell unless you set another.
  • Edit and rerun: change any rule in the card and press Run backtest, or tell ChatGPT what to change.
  • Track it: say "save it". A hypothetical 10,000 portfolio starts from the latest close and is updated after every US market close. Ask "how is strategy #1 doing?" or "show my strategies" any time.
  • Share: say "share strategy #1" for a public link to its rules and record.

Prices

End-of-day prices come from Yahoo Finance and are refreshed once per trading day, after the close settles (around 4:30 pm New York time). A ticker the provider doesn't know is reported as such; check the spelling, or leave it out.

What Shadowfolio won't do

It won't recommend stocks, funds or strategies, predict prices, or place trades. It runs only the rules you describe, and its results are hypothetical.

Your data

Shadowfolio keeps the strategies you save, their tracking records and share links under a scrambled form of ChatGPT's anonymous user ID. Say "stop tracking strategy #N" to delete one, or "Delete my Shadowfolio data" to delete all. Details are in the privacy policy.
